Grassroots for the Ocean

A grassroots video about the importance of caring for our oceans.

Across the globe, people are joining together to protect the areas they love. They are cleaning up their beaches and forcing polluters to stop. Heal the Ocean, a Santa Barbara based non-profit organization, is leading the way toward cleaner ocean water by working to improve wastewater infrastructure such as sewers and septic systems. Their team includes engineers, lawyers, scientists and university laboratories to help locate sources of pollution, assess their significance and find solutions. Their work is a response to a groundswell of public opinion and suport from people who believe that clean oceans are a birthright for everyone. This short film is a tribute to these everyday, motivated, supportive people.

Diving the Goleta Outfall

HTO divers filmed the Goleta Sanitary District outfall in 2002 to use in Regional Water Quality Control Board hearings to overturn the 301(h) waiver allowing GSD to continue discharging wastewater not treated to full secondary levels as required by the Clean Water Act. HTO won its case in January 2004.

ATTACK ON TAJIGUAS! (Part 1)

View the film (55 min.) that has won The Worst Eco-Film of the Year Award! In our early days HTO was very involved in an effort to halt the expansion of the Tajiguas Landfill on the Gaviota Coast (it expanded). This film represents some of our more desperate means of action, and has become a “camp classic.” HTO has greatly upgraded our sampling methods since this time, and also how we do our environmental work…But this film is a great, funny memory to us, and we hope you have fun watching!
