Artist Statement

“Yeshe and Lila” oil on canvas, 30” x 40” $2,900

“Lila and Yeshe’ is part of a series of ocean and surf-related paintings showing our connection to the natural world, a place of solace in uncertain times.  As an avid surfer, I have been focusing recently on the juxtaposition of the experience of isolation and separateness, all the while seeking connection to each other and our environment. ‘Lila and Yeshe’ also depicts women who have been historically underrepresented in surf-related art. This painting shows the pair of young women gazing back at the ocean with the vast sky above, in contemplation after being immersed in the elements of water and wind; where people have previously been, or will be, imagining their future selves. As an artist, I am particularly interested in the elements of light, color, and composition of people and places, often ordinary scenes that may be overlooked but nevertheless captures moments in time.”
