HTO PREVENTS HOMELESS CAMP FROM WASHING OUT TO SEA

Thanks to the fast action of HTO Field Advisor Harry Rabin, another homeless camp, with all its attendant trash and other pollutants, was cleaned up off a South Coast beach, just before a high tide and big surf hit.
Rabin called Brian Borgatello, of MarBorg Industries, who sent a team and equipment, to get the items quickly off the beach. The whole event was covered by the KEYT evening news.

By the next morning, the beach had been scoured by the sea… (all of those items would have ended up in the ocean!)

To top it off, this morning, Brian Borgatello called Heal the Ocean to say that MarBorg was donating its services to this cleanup effort.
Thank you, Brian! Thank you MarBorg Industries!

HTO Helps the City with a Plan to Cover Storm Drains During Fiesta

Fiesta is around the corner (August 4-7, 2022), which means we all need to be extra confetti conscious to ensure our streets, sidewalks, parks, creeks and ocean remain clean and safe from litter! Plastic, mylar, glitter, and sequin confetti does not biodegrade, instead, it goes down the storm drain and into the ocean where wildlife mistakes it for food.

A few Fiestas ago, HTO was approached by the City about covering storm drains to prevent confetti from getting into them, and consequently the ocean. Together we created a map of storm drains to cover before festivities start. This year, HTO Operations Manager Jasmin Tupy and HTO Operations Intern Sydni Trigueiro are working with the City on an updated map since the Parade will be moved to Cabrillo Blvd. (between Castillo St. and the “Chromatic Gates” near the Fess Parker Hilton Resort). State Street is expected to get its usual share of confetti, too.

Additionally, Heal the Ocean is providing the services of Andrew Velikanje and his Earthcomb crew to work on keeping the streets clean during Fiesta.

All of us can help in this effort, to keep our streets and gutters clean. Thank you!

Hillary’s Book, Dancing on Waves – Available Now!

August 5, 2022 is the official publication date of Hillary Hauser’s new book Dancing on Waves: A True Story of Finding Love & Redemption in the Ocean, and it will be available at local bookstores. But you can order your advance copy NOW. (Click on the above image to order).

The book tells of personal anguish and triumph that led Hillary to co-found Heal the Ocean. With the Ocean as a metaphor, the book explores human relationships, health issues, religion – and healing. It is also a front-seat view of the fishermen of the Santa Barbara Harbor, and what it’s like to live on and in the ocean.

From all of us at Heal the Ocean to all of you, thank you, and please stay safe.

Hilary Hauser, Executive Director
