Summerland Oil Mitigation Study (SOMS) Moves Forward
Harry Rabin of On the Wave Productions and Dr. Ira Leifer of Bubbleology Research International (BRI) are advancing Heal the Ocean’s Summerland Oil Mitigation Study (SOMS):
On Land: Towers equipped with a gas chromatograph have been installed over Lookout Park in Summerland. This device can measure the presence of airborne toxins from oil. The readings from the chromatograph produce data files that will be analyzed for a final report.
At Sea: Data is being gathered using a multi-beam sonar. Oil drops, methane bubbles, and the tracking of the Northstar oil well have all been documented. By following the path of methane, the researchers are examining how the abandoned wellheads are interconnected with certain underlying geological features.
The comprehensive approach of the SOMS study is helping to better understand and mitigate the impact of oil leaks in the region.
Oil Oozing Up In Nearby Beach Areas Become Part of the SOMS Study
After receiving reports from HTO supporters, Field Consultant Harry Rabin conducted an aerial survey of the oil leaks on the beach at Loon Point, east of Summerland. The survey revealed an oil sheen on the ocean surface. These observations are now included in the Summerland Oil Mitigation Study (SOMS) being conducted by Heal the Ocean. The researchers are investigating whether or not they may be part of a bigger geological system pushing oil to the surface.
Finally, don’t forget: EDC Green & Blue Event on Sunday, June 9, honoring Hillary as Environmental Hero. Thank you, EDC!
From all of us at HTO to all of you, thank you. Please stay safe.
