Support Heal the Ocean this GivingTuesday!

Today, Tuesday, November 30, is GivingTuesday! GivingTuesday was created in 2012 with a simple goal: to encourage people to act generously and do good. Nearly ten years later, GivingTuesday is a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people each year to celebrate kindness and generosity. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping over, now is the time to get into the Holiday Spirit of #giving by showing up for community organizations. Whether you contribute financially, volunteer your time, or use your voice to share information and kindness, your generosity makes a difference to the community – and we appreciate you for it!

This GivingTuesday, Heal the Ocean thanks you for supporting our work year-round and for helping us complete projects such as:

CLEANUP OF SUMMERLAND BEACH OIL
HTO has been coordinating with State Lands Commission engineers to pinpoint leaking wells on Summerland Beach, and on Thursday this week (12/2) work will begin on capping the Duquesne well, in a construction project expected to continue through Tuesday 12/7/2021. This operation represents the 4th well capped since 2020: Treadwell #10, NorthStar, and Ohlsson 805. We thank HTO Field Advisor Harry Rabin for working with SLC engineers to accurately pinpoint wellheads, and we thank Nora McNeely Hurley’s Manitou Fund for providing funds to pay for equipment and researcher hours to speed along SLC operations.

CLEANUP OF ABANDONED HOMELESS CAMPS
HTO has been actively involved in cleaning up abandoned homeless camps – and big ones they are! The interactive map to chart the camps, from Goleta to Summerland, was created by Harry Rabin’s expert team at On the Wave Productions. Meanwhile, HTO has been working with sheriffs and the great team at MarBorg Industries to remove the homeless camps from the San Jose Creek bed, from under the overpass by the Goleta Slough, and Haskell’s Beach. As this letter is being written, preparations are being made to clean up abandoned camps at More Mesa.

CLEANUP OF CRASHED BOATS ON THE BEACH
HTO has tackled the problem of the environmental mess created by errant trawlers and other vessels hitting the beach and breaking up. We appreciate the ability to make a phone call to MarBorg or Big Green and get immediate action. We are able to do this because of your generous financial help!

AND MUCH, MUCH MORE...
HTO is on the stakeholder committee for the state’s designated $650M in wastewater infrastructure projects, which is part of California’s $1.55B Budget Act of 2021, and through this process, we strive to help California move forward with recycled water projects…We’ve continued to provide Santa Barbara City and County Parks with Doggy Bag funding, to keep our trails and beaches clean(er)…Finally, HTO continues with the immensely successful Styrofoam recycling program we instigated with MarBorg Industries. Our county is one of the very few in California that has such a program.

Your financial help is VITAL. Thank you for supporting us this GivingTuesday!
