HTO REPORT DOCUMENTS 417 BILLION GALLONS
OF POTENTIAL WATER FOR CALIFORNIA

HTO has just published  The Inventory of Municipal Wastewater Discharges to California Coastal Waters, a three-year research project headed by former HTO Policy Analyst James Hawkins. The report focuses on the vast water recycling potential in California - enough for eight million coastal Californians! The report, which was immediately picked up by local NPR Station KCBX, determined that 57 different municipal treatment plants discharged over 417 billion gallons of wastewater into coastal bodies of water throughout California. If 85 percent of that coastal discharge were recycled, water needs could be met for a fifth of California’s population.

The complete interactive study is available here

The printer friendly PDF is available here

You can hear the interview of James Hawkins on local NPR Station KCBXhere.

Additional thanks go to former HTO staffers Corey Radis, ME, and Alex Bennett, MESM, who provided valuable research assistance for the project.
