Today, Monday, June 8, 2020, is World Oceans Dayand this year it comes with a call to world leaders to protect 30% of our blue planet by 2030. With recent world troubles that are very serious, we have become more aware than ever how connected we all are, from one end of the planet to the other, all people and continents are connected by the ocean.

Designated in 2008 by the United Nations, World Oceans Day is a day to celebrate and renew our commitment to protect and honor the ocean we all love and rely on for life. This year's theme is "Together We Can #ProtectOurHome" - with a call to join the 30x30 movement to safeguard at least 30% of our ocean through a network of highly protected areas. In this way, we can take part in a healthy home for all.

Everyone can give back to our ocean, so, on this World Oceans Day, please consider taking one or more of the following actions:

  • Sign a Petition: Sign the 30x30 petition to tell world leaders that you want action to #ProtectOurHome. Click here to sign the petition.

  • Clean a Beach: You can participate in change with your own two hands today - simply grab your garden gloves and a trash bag, and spend an hour or two picking up trash at the beach - or your neighborhood, local park, or trail. Please don't forget to wear gloves and properly dispose of the trash you collect in marked collection bins. Please, please wash your hands thoroughly when you are done.

  • Repurpose your Styrofoam: Styrofoam is a significant source of ocean pollution. The next time you receive a package with Styrofoam in it, take the clean, dry Styrofoam to the MarBorg recycling center - 20 David Love Place, Goleta - so the foam can be repurposed into usable products. The program is for drop off only, please do not put Styrofoam in your blue recycling bin.

  • Garden with Organics: Synthetic fertilizers are harmful to the ocean. When synthetic fertilizer runoff enters the ocean, it introduces excess nutrients and causes eutrophication that disrupts oxygen levels in the water and causes animal die-offs. Instead of using synthetic fertilizer in your garden, use natural fertilizers, or go organic.

  • Have a Sea Adventure: Celebrate World Oceans Day with your kids by exploring Heal the Ocean's Sea Adventure Guide. From science lessons and webinars to crafts and activities, the Guide includes something for everyone in the family. So, put on your virtual scuba gear and dive on in!

The ocean thanks you! Heal the Ocean thanks you, too.
