Homeless Camp Cleanup Summerland (HTO/2019)

Homeless camps are not only unsafe for the unsheltered living there, but if they’re near the beach or watershed or storm drain, they pose a threat to the health and sanitation of the ocean. With the help of Nora McNeely Hurley’s generous donation from her family’s Manitou Fund, Heal the Ocean financially supported the Home for Good intervention program in the Summerland seaside camp, wherein Americorps volunteer(s) visited the camp to check on residents. However, one abandoned camp on the cliffs of Summerland posed a big problem. HTO was able to contact Union Pacific Railroad, which owns the property, and finally, on April 26, 2019, Union Pacific sent in equipment and men, to clean it up.
